July 8, 2004
It was sad to leave Mitchell’s wonderful guest house this morning. Before leaving, Marina had the chance to ride on Chester, one of the Kertzman horses, with Mitchell’s wife and daughter. Lenny took the opportunity for one more quick dose of T1. And I eagerly shared Mitchell’s low-carb cashews.
We hit the road for Cody, Wyoming, where I had read there was a shoot-out at noon. Although we made it by noon, unfortunately the shoot-out is at 6:00pm so we didn’t get to see it. The town of Cody was a little disappointing. I had thought it was a cute, wild west town, but in reality it’s a pretty large, not very cute, wild west town. We went to the Buffalo Bill museum which is quite impressive. Buffalo Bill was a real character, and it seems his greatest accomplishment was self promotion, which he did very well.
We also saw the Firearms Museum, which is the largest collection of firearms in the world. This means that they display thousands of rifles, pistols, and other assorted shooting things, one after the other, in long hallways. At the end, the museum signage urged you to continue to the research center below, which contained thousands more. I kept looking for the part of the exhibit that explained the societal impact of firearms, or some compelling poster about firearms safety, but couldn’t seem to find that part of the exhibit.
Now we’re in Greybull, Wyoming, where we stopped quickly in a quilting store. This store had thousands of bolts of beautiful cloth to be used to make quilts. Interestingly, the store is mainly an internet store (check out www.bighornquilts.com). The physical presence is huge, but it is mainly storage for selling over the internet. Hard to imagine that many people in Greybull do quilting!!
Our RV park tonight is very quiet. Seems strange without Grace here!
Still no Starbucks. We’re getting low on our coffee and are dreading having to buy Maxwell House.
